NEW POLL: Christopher Newport University Shows Majority of Virginians Support Voter-Approved Action to Level the Playing Field

Newport News, Va. — A new statewide poll conducted by the Christopher Newport University Wason Center for Civic Leadership shows that Virginians support a temporary, voter-approved constitutional amendment that would give voters the final say on fair congressional maps to level the playing field in Washington — ensuring elections are decided by voters, not politicians.

According to the survey, 51% of Virginia voters support or strongly support the effort to take this proactive step toward fair representation, while only 43% oppose the change. The poll underscores Virginia voters’ commitment to fairness and transparency.

The proposed amendment — passed by both the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate — would temporarily allow the legislature to adjust congressional boundaries in response to extraordinary manipulation in other states that could affect Virginia’s political influence. The amendment expires automatically and preserves Virginia’s bipartisan redistricting process after 2030.

A clear majority of voters support fairness and democratic accountability being central to the process of drawing congressional districts. The measure would give voters — not courts or politicians — the final say.

The CNU/Wason Center poll was conducted January 13–20, 2026, among 807 registered Virginia voters.
