Ahead of Early Vote, Governor Spanberger Reaffirms Support, Urges Virginians to Vote YES and Level the Playing Field Against Trump’s Power Grab

Richmond, Va. — Ahead of early vote starting, Governor Abigail Spanberger released a video message reaffirming her support for voting YES in the April 21 referendum, emphasizing that ‘’Virginia has the opportunity to take action” against  “a President who says he’s ‘entitled’ to more Republican seats before this year’s midterms.”

In her message, Governor Spanberger highlights that states across the country have redrawn their congressional maps at the direction of Donald Trump. She notes that Virginia is responding differently — by underscoring the temporary nature of the measure, emphasizing that Virginia must respond to the actions of other states, and reinforcing the preservation of Virginia’s fair redistricting process.

“Governor Spanberger is standing up for Virginians and against Donald Trump’s power grab,” said Keren Charles Dongo, Campaign Manager for Virginians for Fair Elections. “While MAGA Republicans try to rig the 2026 midterm elections, Governor Spanberger and Virginia’s Democratic leaders have put this decision directly in the hands of voters to vote YES.”

Early voting in Virginia begins March 6. Election Day is April 21.

Hello, I’m Governor Abigail Spanberger — and I’m voting YES on Virginia’s redistricting amendment. Here’s why:

I supported the formation of Virginia’s bipartisan redistricting commission in 2020, and that support has not changed.

What has changed is what we are seeing in states across the country — and a President who says he’s “entitled” to more Republican seats before this year’s midterms.

That’s a direct quote, “entitled”.

And Virginia has the opportunity to take action in response. And our approach is different.

First, it’s temporary.

Second, it’s directly in response to what other states decide to do.

Third, and most importantly for me, it preserves Virginia’s fair redistricting process into the future.

At this extraordinary moment, I urge all Virginians to join me in voting YES by April 21st.
