ICYMI: Kaine, McClellan, Price Champion “YES” Vote As Virginians Head to the Polls
Richmond, Va. — As early voting begins across the Commonwealth, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, U.S. Representative Jennifer McClellan, and Delegate Marcia Price today held a press conference urging Virginians to vote YES on the upcoming redistricting referendum, calling the measure an essential step to level the playing field against Trump’s power grab.
“These are tough times,” Kaine said. “But Virginia, true to its history as a state committed to democracy, has an opportunity to stand against tyranny once again on April 21.”
Kaine emphasized the importance of having representatives who will defend the integrity of elections if they are once again challenged by Trump.
“Should the president be unhappy with the results of the 2026 or 2028 elections and attempt to interfere with implementing the people’s will, Virginia will need a congressional delegation willing to stand up against that kind of tyranny — not one that will simply roll over and accept it,” Kaine said.
Rep. Jennifer McClellan highlighted the stark difference between Virginia’s approach and the actions taken by Republican lawmakers in other states without voter approval.
“Unlike in Texas or Missouri, the people of Virginia will decide whether this change moves forward,” McClellan said. “The constitutional amendment makes clear that redistricting would only be triggered if other states take similar actions without a court order. That would be unprecedented, particularly if such actions were taken at the direction of a president.”
Delegate Marcia Price, who chairs the House Privileges and Elections Committee, said the national pressure campaign around redistricting underscores the importance of the upcoming vote.
“I’ve never in my life heard a sitting president call for states to ‘find’ additional congressional seats,” Price said. “What we are experiencing is not normal, and it should not be treated as normal.”
Price also noted support for the referendum from President Barack Obama and Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.
“President Obama has endorsed voting YES on this referendum and recently released a video urging Virginians to level the playing field,” Price said. “Our very own governor, Abigail Spanberger, not only signed the legislation putting this referendum before voters but has also reinforced her full support for the YES campaign,”
Early voting for the referendum began today across Virginia. Election Day is April 21. Virginians can find their voting information at iwillvote.com.
