NEW: Supreme Court of Virginia Clears Path for April 21 Referendum in Major Victory for Virginia Voters
Richmond, Va. — In a victory for Virginia voters, the Supreme Court of Virginia today issued an order making clear that nothing in Republicans’ ongoing litigation challenging the validity of referendum prevents the April 21, 2026 election from moving forward as scheduled.
The Court denied motions to stay the lower court’s order, but stated that the denial of the stay “has no effect on the referendum scheduled for April 21, 2026.”
“Today’s order is a huge win for Virginia voters,” said Dan Gottlieb, spokesperson for Virginians for Fair Elections. “The Court made it clear that nothing in this case stops the April 21 referendum from moving forward and that Virginians will have the final say. This has always been a procedural challenge aimed at stopping voters from even having a say. The referendum proceeds, and the people of Virginia remain in charge of their own elections.”
