YES Campaign Condemns MAGA-Linked Group Sending Offensive Mailers Misusing Civil Rights Imagery
Richmond, Va. — Virginians for Fair Elections today condemned a series of offensive and deceptive mailers being sent to Black voters by a MAGA-linked group opposing Virginia’s redistricting referendum — misusing imagery from the civil rights movement and invoking Jim Crow in an attempt to scare voters into opposing the measure.
The mailers, which are being distributed by a Republican-linked political group opposing the referendum, use hurtful, racist imagery while falsely suggesting that the referendum threatens Black representation. Voting rights advocates say the tactic is designed to confuse voters and discourage support for a measure intended to stop Trump’s power grab and level the playing field ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
“These mailers are offensive and deceptive,” said Keren Charles Dongo, Campaign Manager of Virginians for Fair Elections. “A MAGA-linked group is sending mailers to Black voters misusing imagery from the civil rights movement and even invoking Jim Crow — weaponizing one of the darkest chapters in our history to scare people into voting no and help Republicans rig the 2026 midterms. The same MAGA Republicans pushing gerrymandered maps in states like Texas and Florida are now trying to manipulate voters in Virginia. Virginians will see these tactics for what they are and vote YES to level the playing field and make sure the 2026 midterms are decided by voters — not politicians manipulating our elections.”
The redistricting referendum gives voters the opportunity to level the playing field after MAGA-led efforts across the country to rig the 2026 midterms.
Early voting is underway across Virginia. Election Day is April 21.
